Hunting Tents

Hunting tents are large tents that are generally made of durable canvas. Most hunting tents, also called wall tents, have walls that are five feet tall, peaked roofs, and floor plans that range in size from 8′ x 10′ to 16′ x 20′. These large tents are designed for hunters that set up a camp and hunt in the same area for several days or more at a time. Many people that hunt elk, big horn sheep, and other large game in Colorado, Alaska, Montana, and other wide-open areas use this type of hunting tent.

The size of hunting tents is not the only feature that set this type of tent apart from other types of tents. First, wall tents are made of treated canvas while many other types of tents are made from nylon or other materials. Another difference is that hunting tents have tall pitched roofs that allow the occupants of the tent to stand and walk upright. Most wall tents are equipped with stovepipes that allow for the use of a cooking stove inside of the tent. Most wall tents also have a canvas “porch” attached giving the hunters extra room.

Hunting tents are available in many different sizes with many different options. For instance, while most wall tents use aluminum poles for the frame there are also models that use wood poles, and types that do not use any poles at all for a frame. You can choose models that feature zippered doors or doors that use tiebacks to hold the door closed. Another option many manufacturers offer on their wall tents is treated canvas. Most manufacturers treat their canvas against water, and mildew but also offer treatments that make their tents fireproof.

If you are in the market for a hunting tent, there are things you should know about these types of tents. Ideally, you need to check the tent’s back door, and make sure it comes with a zipper or a window for ventilation during warm months. Keep in mind that a canvas tent that does not come with a back door will prevent you from suffocating. Another important consideration when choosing a hunting tent is the size. If you are unable to choose between two sizes of different tents, then you should go for a much larger tent. When deciding on the size, consider the number of people who will be using the tent, so you can analyze the suitable size you need.

Not all canvas tents are created equal. When it comes to canvas, there are many different types and grades of canvas on the market. Make sure that you purchase a tent that is made from heavy-duty canvas that is reinforced at all pressure points. You should also watch for manufacturers that charge extra for features that are optional on most hunting tents. For instance, many manufacturers charge extra for zippered doors and windows, but many companies offer these features standard on their tents. Another of the things you should watch for when purchasing hunting tents is the quality of the frame. A high quality frame is as important to a wall tent as high quality canvas.

Most tents come with a fly or special feature that prevents leak on the part where the canvas touches the tent’s frame. A tent fly solves any problem about leaking or wicking due to moisture or cold weather. A fly also prevents sparks that come from your stovepipe, which can burn the roof of your tent. You will also need to make sure that the tent comes with a fly, as this can protect the material from UV rays that may deteriorate the canvas. Lastly, you can obtain ample air space between the fly and the roof, so there it better insulation when you want to keep the temperature inside the tent a bit warmer.

As for the fly set up, it typically rests on the top portion of the tent ridge, and it may extend up to 12 inches on each side of the tent. The fly may also come with about 4-inch gap, and this may be obtained by ensuring that the fly stakes are farther from the side walls of your tent. The gap is necessary in removing moisture on the roof.

Additional factors you should look for in a hunting tent include a tent bag for storage purposes, as well as the color of your tent. It is ideal to buy a white tent, as this can reflect lantern light better than colored or off-white tents. Furthermore, you should consider buying a clear and translucent fly because this allows ample light to pass through efficiently. With a dark fly, the interior of your tent may seem quite dark.

Lastly, decide if you need a cook shack, which may cost as much as the tent with a similar size. You may realize that it is a sensible option to purchase another tent for your cook shack, and have the convenience of using a smaller tent when only a few people will go camping or hunting. You should also set a budget for the tent, and make sure you stick to the amount you prefer to spend for this item. However, never compromise quality by choosing a cheaper type of tent that will end up deteriorating quickly.
